Advisory Board

The Grad Network Advisory Board is here for you!  Contact any of the members listed below with event ideas, questions about Philly, or requests for a free cup of coffee so you can get to know each other!

Chana-Rivka Foster
is a 3rd year medical student at Jefferson Medical College. Originally from San Francisco, she moved to Boston to complete her undergraduate studies at Brandeis University, before moving to Philadelphia to start medical school.  In her free time, she enjoys reading, spending time with loved ones, and exploring the sites of Philadelphia.

Emily Gerstell is Social Chair on the Grad Network Advisory Board.  She moved here almost 4 years ago from NYC to pursue a PhD in English Literature at Penn.  She grew up mostly in Washington, DC and Hong Kong and speaks fluent French and Mandarin.  She loves meeting new people, planning events for the Grad Network, doing yoga, eating dim sum, and emailing people articles from the New York Times and New Yorker. Like any Jewish woman worth her salt, she always brings a sweater and a snack, just in case.

Elise Gilbert  is co-Israel Chair/Member at Large on the Advisory Board. She is a fourth year student at Temple University School of Pharmacy. Elise grew up in Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan for undergrad (GO BLUE!). She enjoys hanging out with the grad network to meet new people and be involved in the city's young Jewish community. Outside of the grad network, Elise enjoys baking, people watching, watching college football and traveling to new places. Elise hopes to meet you at a grad network event this year! :)

Jamie Gray (Tzedek Chair) is in her second year at Temple studying School Psychology. Originally from Tampa, she graduated from the University of Florida in 2010. When she is not in class, out in schools, or studying, she likes to laugh, hang out with friends, and give back to the community.

Alex Hochster Is a 4th year Dental Student at Penn.  Originally from Manhattan, she moved to Philly in 2008 for school and fell in love with the city and the Grad Network.  Favorite activities include Shabbat meals with wonderful friends and finding new fun restaurants and bars in the city.

Aaron Hodes
:
As an energetic med student, I work hard and play hard, but I also like to see the historic stuff sometimes as well. I highly admire the history and energy of Philly. If I am not studying, which is most of my time, I'll probably be hanging out in Rittenhouse Square or just wandering through Philly looking for historical gems. I enjoy the Grad Network's diverse and dynamic community, and I try to give back to the community as much as it gives to me.

Sheila Kaufman:  I’ve been hanging out with the Grad Network since moving to Philly in 2007. Before then, Chicago and Boston were been my homes. By day I’m a nurse-midwifery student at Penn, and by night (and really early morning) I’m a pilates instructor. The Grad Network is a great place to find good food, friends and fun. Come join us!

Laura Liss
is excited to be one of the Shabbat co-chairs on the advisory board this year.  She's currently a second year medical student at Temple.  She's a big fan of the Schuylkill River Trail, soft pretzels, and the Broad Street Run.  Her non-Philly interests include spending too much time perusing apartmenttherapy, reading, and dreaming about traveling to lots of countries.  Originally from Pittsburgh, Laura spent four years living in NYC where she attended Barnard College and the Jewish Theological Seminary before moving to Philadelphia.  She is looking forward to meeting you at a Shabbat program this year!

  Abigail Pleeter (GAP Chair)

Sheri Rosenberg
is excited to be one of the Peer Networking chairs!! She is in her second year at Gratz College obtaining a masters degree in Jewish communal service and non-profit management. She graduated from Ohio State University in 2006 with a degree in women's studies and a minor in education. When Sheri is not at school she loves to cheer on her beloved Buckeyes, read, shop for scarves and jewelry, and hang out with friends. She also seems to have made a habit of defending her home state of New Jersey on a regular basis. She enjoys meeting new people and giving back to her community.

Deborah Shroder
graduated from the University of Maryland in 2010 and is currently a PhD student in biophysics at Penn. In addition to serving as peer networking co-chair, she hosts couchsurfers on their visits to Philly, tries to garden on her fire escape, and is still searching for the perfect food to bring to grad network potlucks.

Molly Sinderbrand
is a Shabbat co-chair. She is in her second year as a philosophy PhD student at Penn. She graduated from Washington University in St Louis in 2009, and received her masters in a joint program from Utrecht University and Linkoping University. Molly grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, and though she's lived many places, she will always be a cheesehead at heart. This year, she plans to bake many delicious desserts and breads for grad network potlucks, travel to Jersey to find (good) kosher wines, and do everything she can to organize some awesome Shabbats. She'd love to hear your ideas!

David Weiss
is a 5th year economics Ph.D. student at UPenn. Favorite activities include travel, canoeing, going to concerts, Jewish stuff, and pretending to be Israeli. But don't let him trick you, he's from NJ.

Naomi Wischnia
is co-Israel Chair. A recent grad of the masters program in Education at the University of Pennsylvania, she currently teaches kindergarten.  When Naomi is not spending her time with her elementary school friends, she enjoys cooking, running, and listening to Israeli music.  Her favorite food is hummus (which she believes she likes more than the Zohan does).
